Father Thomas McElroy, ss.cc. is a member of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (SS.CC.), an international missionary community founded in France in 1800.  Fr. Tom has been a Sacred Hearts Religious and a Priest for almost fifty years.

He began his career in the inner city of upper state New York and was in the home missions of his community in the Diocese of Brownsville, Texas for six years.  He was also assigned to the Sacred Hearts House of Theology in Washington, D.C. in the ministry of Formation, and while in there did extensive work with military families.  Fr. Tom spent eight years in the Washington-Virginia area.

Fr. Tom was became a pastor in the Fall River, Massachusetts Diocese in 1983.  He was assigned as pastor in two parishes for about seven years until he was called by his community to take over the Sacred Hearts Retreat Center in Wareham, Massachusetts.  While there he built the center into a place for coming aside to be with the Lord and to grow into spiritual life.  Fr. Tom remained at the Retreat Center for ten years, giving retreats locally, nationally and internationally.

After being given permission to enter the Preaching Ministry full time, Fr. Tom traveled the world giving retreats and days of prayer and serving the communities.  For twelve years, he was also associated with Worldwide Marriage Encounters as a team Priest.

After completing his term as pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, Fr. Tom began a Prison Ministry for men and women in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.  He also resumed a limited schedule of retreat ministry.

Fr. Tom is a native of New England, coming from the “great little” state of Rhode Island.  He received his higher education from the University of Ontario, Canada, St. Mary’s College in Winona, Minnesota and did his studies for the Priesthood at the Sacred Hearts Major Seminary in New Hampshire.  After four years of active ministry, Fr. Tom went on to receive a Master’s degree in applied spirituality from the University of San Francisco.
