Using the Retreat Center

 Welcome to Wareham!

We are pleased you are sharing your spiritual journey with us. Know that the staff members are keeping you in our prayers as you visit with us. If you need anything please know that each staff member is ready to assist you in any way that we can, just ask us.

Below are some house guidelines and information to assist you in your stay. We ask that a contemplative atmosphere be maintained so that all enjoy their stay and inner journeying. Thanks and blessings.

Outdoors: You are visiting a 118 acre site, much of which fronts on Widow's Cove which is part of Buzzard's Bay at the very tip of the West end of the Cape Cod Canal. A casual walk along the wooded paths or down to the waterfront by the Boathouse will reveal a variety of trees and wildlife. Finches, bluebirds, osprey, cardinals, deer, squirrels, doves, starlings, and an occasional red fox abound on the property. You are free to enjoy them all.

Fire Safety and Evacuation: The retreat center is equipped with a state-of-the-art fire detection system. Should the alarm go off please leave the building immediately and stand at a safe distance. The fire department is automatically summoned, once the alarm is activated. Please note the evacuation map located in your room and hallway. Identify the nearest exit to your sleeping room.

Smoking: We are pleased to be a smoke free environment. If you smoke, please do so outside and carefully extinguish the material and dispose of them in the buckets provided. Please do not smoke in the woods or on the beach.

Common Rooms: To maintain an atmosphere of retreat, we ask that you refrain from socializing in the chapel or sleeping quarters. Please use the common areas, e.g. the front parlor, library, patio, dining room, conference room, and coffee lounge available to you. We request that one be quiet after 10:00 P.M.

Food and Beverages: Complimentary coffee and teas are available in the coffee lounge at all times. Snack and beverages you bring may be stored in the refrigerator in the retreatents dining room.

Meals: If the Retreat Center is providing your meals, they will normally be served in the dining room of the Manor House. Meals are hearty and usually served family style. Meal times are as follows: 8AM Breakfast; 12 Noon Lunch, 5PM Dinner.

Phone Access: A phone is located in each building (except the Boathouse). A phone is located under the main stairway in the Manor. Local emergency numbers are posted near each phone.

Note: The Retreat House phone number (508) 295-0100, may be given to your family as a "can be reached" number in the event of an emergency. A staff will take the call and bring the message to you at once. Please advise people not to call after 8:00 P.M. unless it is an emergency.

Cell Phones: In order to keep a contemplative atmosphere of prayer we ask that cell phones not be used. If you must use it please do so in a private place. Be advised that where we are located does not allow for good reception and it is best outside of the buildings. Emergency use, of course is not a problem.

Vehicles and Parking: Please park in designated areas only. While it is fine to unload near the doors, please use the parking lots for the remainder of your stay. The lots are marked for the Manor and Youth Center. No vehicles are allowed to the boathouse and along the trails. If a handicapped person needs a vehicle to reach the boathouse, please ask a staff member to assist and ready the path for you.

Security: Doors must be locked at 10PM each day. Please have a member of your retreat group designated as the person who locks doors and shuts off lights at night. It will be most helpful.

Outdoor fires: Outdoor fires are not permitted on any part of the property at any time.

Swimming: Swimming is at your own risk. Buddy system is in effect for all.

House Keeping Services: Please inform a staff member if you need any extra blankets, trash bags, toiletries, etc. Rooms will be cleaned after you depart and not during. Staff will make every effort to clean common rooms but your assistance would be helpful.

Water Conservation: Our drinking water comes from a well located on the property. We test it regularly to assure quality. We are happy to report it is delicious. We ask that you use your linens and towels for the duration of your weekend stay. This simple act will save thousands of gallons of water each year and prevent detergents from going into the environment.

Repair and Maintenance Requests: If you find any items in need of repair in your room or around the buildings and ground please complete a "Fix-It-Slip" located in your room and give it to a staff member. This is very helpful as sometimes we do not know that a light bulb is out, or a door is stuck or a faucet drips.

At Stay's End: Please strip your bed and fold blanket and cover spread and leave it at the foot of your bed. Place used linens in the pillowcases and bring them to the basket outside the kitchen.

Enjoy your stay!
