SEAT PLEASANT, MARYLAND

St. Margaret's Catholic community

Since July 1, 1988, St. Margaret's Parish has been entrusted into the care of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.  Fr. Fintan Sheeran, ss.cc., and  Fr. Benedict Folger, ss.cc., were the first priests to minister to the faith community.  Fr. David Lupo, ss.cc., is now pastor.  St. Margaret’s is also the site for the Congregation’s Pre-Novitiate Program, directed by Fr. Pat Fanning, ss.cc.

Located on Addison Road in Seat Pleasant, Maryland, the original church was built in 1908, and was a gift of Francis Carmody who named it after his mother's patron saint, St. Margaret of Scotland.  Like most parishioners during the turn of the century, Mr. Carmody had to travel to Holy Name Church in Northeast Washington to attend Mass.  To facilitate the availability of worship, he made a proposal to the pastor of St. Teresa's Church in Anacostia to build a church and take on the financial responsibilities that it would accrue.  This generous proposal was accepted by Cardinal Gibbons.

Steady growth of the community led to the erection of St. Matthias Church in 1911.  St. Matthias was staffed by priests who served at St. Margaret's.  The two churches coexisted until 1955.  The little mission church is located on Nova Avenue in Capitol Heights.

On December 18, 1955, the new St. Margaret's auditorium-church, school, and convent were dedicated along with the consolidation of the old St. Margaret's and St. Matthias.  The sisters of the Felician Order operated the school until 1981.

On November 15, 1992, the community of St. Margaret's celebrated the first St. Margaret's Feast Day, wherein they celebrated themselves as people loved by God and as a family enjoying the love of God together.
